Jumping off the BIG ferry docks around these islands is a major pastime for the island kids. The lower the tide, the bigger the thrill since the jump grows by about 12-15 feet between high and low tide. For added adventure, the more daring or more experienced islanders jump right as the ferry leaves the docks with its engine revving to make a giant wake. The other day at very low tide, The Spark and I had our maiden jump. We hemmed and hawed for a painfully long time, but we did it! the store owners at this particular dock said that six is the youngest they've ever seen do the jump at low tide. Most kids start at 8 or 9. Zippy did it last year at six and now The Spark can add her six years worth of bravery to the list too.
